WordPress vs. Drupal
Not that I am especially qualified to judge the value of either blog/content management suite, but…
I am new this (blogging), so am trying a few different products (namely Blogger, Drupal and WordPress) seeking the best fit for my needs (which are a bit open ended right now). I intially tried Blogger via Blogspot.com a little over a year ago, but was too busy to keep up with it. Having recently decided to rededicate myself to getting this blog off the ground, one of the first orders of business was to address my hosting arrangement. I had for many years used a company now called ‘Hostcentric’, but found that my only reason for staying with them for as long as I had was laziness. I was paying too much for features I wasn’t using and finally ‘found’ the time to move to a more affordable hosting solution – BlueHost. Having done this, I then began to explore my options for hosting a blog myself – so, out with Blogger/Blogspot. BlueHost offered several easy-install options and after a bit of research, I narrowed my options to WordPress and Drupal. The first one I tried was Drupal, which appeared to offer more flexibility for modification. Billed as a ‘Content Manager’, it suggested more powerful features and pluggins. This, may in fact, be the case. However, I found myself again doing what I had done for so many years with my previous host, paying too much (time/effort) for features I would likely never use. Ultimately, what I really need is a mature, relatively user-friendly interface for rapid web log publishing. So, I switched again and believe I have found a good fit with WordPress. Hopefully I can spend more of what little time I have creating content and less time ‘managing’ it. We’ll see how that goes.
